LONDON — Arsenal are reportedly preparing to make a stunning decision over the future of manager Mikel Arteta, with the club allegedly ready to part ways with the Spanish coach if he fails to deliver the Champions League trophy.
The dramatic development comes amid growing pressure on Arteta to take Arsenal to the next level in Europe. Although the manager has transformed the club into one of England’s strongest sides, senior figures at the Emirates are said to believe that domestic success alone is no longer enough.
According to sources close to the fictional situation, Arsenal’s board has privately made the Champions League the ultimate target. Failure to win the competition could lead to an extraordinary change in the dugout at the end of the season.
“Everyone respects what Mikel has achieved,” one alleged club source said. “But this club has reached a point where competing is not enough. The Champions League is the trophy everyone wants.”
The pressure on Arteta would be particularly intense because of the huge investment Arsenal have made in the squad. The club have continued to strengthen in an attempt to compete on every front, including the recent signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle in a major deal. “Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have signed Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United on a four-year contract with an option for an additional year. The transfer, valued at around £75 million ($101.16 million), marks a major acquisition for Mikel Arteta’s squad. Guimaraes, formerly Newcastle’s captain, is recognized as one of the league’s top midfielders, praised for his defensive solidity and attacking creativity. He joins a strong Arsenal midfield lineup that includes Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Martin Odegaard. Guimaraes expressed excitement about the move, seeing it as a new and exciting challenge. His departure is a significant loss for Newcastle, who have recently seen the exits of key players like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, as well as manager Eddie Howe, who has been replaced by Matthias Jaissle. Guimaraes made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals during his time at Newcastle, leading them to a League Cup victory in 2025.
Arsenal view his arrival as a key move to help retain their league title and boost their European ambitions. The team kicks off the new season against promoted Coventry City on August 21.
Supporters would undoubtedly be divided by such a decision. Arteta has rebuilt Arsenal into a genuine powerhouse and has restored belief among the fanbase. However, some supporters have increasingly demanded European success after years of near misses.
The fictional report claims that Arsenal’s hierarchy has already drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements, although no names have been officially confirmed.
Arteta, meanwhile, would reportedly remain focused on his job and refuse to discuss speculation surrounding his future.
“I don’t think about that,” the manager would tell reporters. “My focus is on the players, the next match and trying to win every competition available to us.”
The situation could therefore become one of the biggest managerial stories in European football if Arsenal fall short in the Champions League.
For now, however, the supposed ultimatum remains fictional. Arsenal’s actual hierarchy has not announced that Arteta will be dismissed if the club fails to win the Champions League.
One thing is certain: if Arsenal are serious about becoming a dominant force in Europe, the pressure to finally lift the biggest trophy in club football will be enormous.
