Aston Villa are reportedly ready to accelerate their transfer plans after suffering a narrow defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, with the club looking to bring in three more players before the summer transfer window closes.
Villa were beaten 2-1 by PSG in Salzburg, despite a spirited performance from Unai Emery’s side. Teenage forward Brian Madjo made history by becoming the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history when he brought Villa level, but Désiré Doué’s late winner handed the European champions the trophy.
The defeat highlighted both the potential and the weaknesses within Emery’s revamped squad. Villa have already experienced a major summer of change, with several important players leaving the club. Morgan Rogers completed a British-record move to Chelsea, while Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United. Jadon Sancho, Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne have also departed, leaving Emery with a squad that still requires greater depth.
Villa have already begun rebuilding. New midfielder João Gomes made his competitive debut against PSG, while Johan Manzambi has also joined the club but was unavailable for the Super Cup because of injury. The performance of the new arrivals, together with the emergence of young players such as Madjo, has given supporters reasons for optimism.
However, Emery is understood to want further reinforcements, particularly after seeing his team struggle with absences in key positions. Before the Super Cup, Villa were without Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, while Amadou Onana and Manzambi were also unavailable.
The proposed three additions would give Emery more options as Villa prepare for another demanding Premier League campaign and a return to European competition. The club’s recruitment strategy is likely to focus on adding quality without disrupting the balance of a squad that has undergone significant changes during the summer.
For Villa supporters, the Super Cup defeat may have been disappointing, but the performance against PSG showed that Emery’s team can compete with Europe’s elite. The challenge now is turning that promise into consistency.
With the transfer window still open, Villa are expected to remain active in the market. Three further signings could provide the depth and experience needed to cope with a long season—and help the club respond strongly after missing out on the Super Cup trophy.
The message from the defeat is clear: Aston Villa have ambition, but Emery knows his squad still needs strengthening.
